Why Take This Course?

This course is designed to give students a perspective on an essential, complex and misunderstood discipline. The course will also be somewhat specific and granular in covering certain finance topics (saving/investing/taxes/credit) that we all deal with throughout our lives.

Mr. Michael G. Ryan has worked in the fields of finance and accounting since graduating from Georgetown University in 1974.  He also attended the University of Pennsylvania and received his MBA from the Wharton School in 1977.

He is currently the Chief Financial Officer of Equity Group Holdings, the investment vehicle of Steven and Mitchell Rales. Portfolio companies include Danaher Corporation (a NYSE company with $17 billion in annual revenues), Fortive Corporation and Colfax Corporation. He has worked with the Rales since 1985 and has been an officer and director of a number of manufacturing companies and non-profit organizations.

Mr. Ryan was on the Board of Trustees of the SEED Foundation from 1999 through 2015.  SEED is a non-profit organization that partners with urban communities to operate schools for underserved children. Hallmarks of the SEED Schools in Washington, Baltimore and Miami include a residential boarding program and a rigorous curriculum that prepares SEED graduates for success in college and beyond.

Mr. Ryan also worked as a certified public accountant in the Washington, DC office of Arthur Andersen & Co. from 1977-1985.  His clients included Children’s Hospital, the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and Radio Free Europe.

Mr. Ryan began teaching at Georgetown University in 2000. He has been an Adjunct Professor in both the McDonough School of Business the College of Arts & Sciences.
